Summer Knitting Brings Autumn Dreams and… a Seahorse

Mid-summer in Tbilisi brings heat that makes you dream of cooler days. The air shimmers. Coffee needs ice cubes. But my hands? They’re already reaching for yarn that whispers of autumn.

There’s magic in this contradiction. Summer sun floods my workspace. Yet I’m planning cozy things.

Left panel: A hand holding a ball of seafoam green yarn with knitting needles and the beginning of a knitted cuff against a weathered wooden background. Right panel: An almost completed fingerless mitten being worn on a hand, displayed against a wooden window frame with natural lighting, showing the ribbed cuff and stockinette stitch body of the finished mitt.

I’m thinking of autumn markets where my finished pieces will find their homes. It feels like planting seeds in summer soil, knowing they’ll bloom when the season changes. It’s a bridge: from sunny afternoons to crisp cool mornings.

Why I Start My Autumn Projects in June

Summer knitting for autumn gives me time to breathe. No rushing. No panic before the first cold snap.

I love this peaceful rhythm. When October arrives, I’ll slip on something I made with summer’s patience. The memory of these quiet evenings will warm me twice.

The Adventure of Choosing Yarn

Walking into a yarn shop becomes treasure hunting. I explore textures, and I finally found the yarn that stopped me cold. Vintage turquoise yarn balls, like Mediterranean waters. The composition looks (and feels!) perfect: camel hair, cashmere, silk. French mills from decades past created magic.

And when I held it, a seahorse appeared in my mind!

Four skeins of vintage French yarn in a soft turquoise color, nestled in a brown knitted garment. The yarn has a classic twisted construction and retains its original black and red product label. The luxurious fiber displays a subtle sheen and appears to be a fine wool or wool blend typical of vintage French yarn craftsmanship.
Years ago, Anny Blatt’s factory ceased production of this yarn. That makes the yarn even more valuable!

My Seahorse Mittens Story

I couldn’t stop smiling at the idea. A seahorse on my new fingerless mittens! These tiny creatures live in warm tropical waters. They’ll never feel winter’s bite. But here they’ll be, decorating hands that need warmth on cold days. It’s like sending a postcard from summer to winter. From a season that will never meet its opposite.

The pattern creates tiny squares. Each square builds the graceful shape of the little hippocampus. Pixel by pixel, stitch by stitch, summer memories become autumn comfort.

The image displays knitting pattern charts labeled 'Seahorse Pattern' with grid layouts marked with X's, balls of seafoam green yarn, knitting needles, and partially completed mittens featuring the distinctive seahorse motif in a darker green shade against the lighter background.

Finding Magic in Everyday Moments

Ideas for autumn crafts come from everywhere. A shell on my desk suggests a new texture. My mom’s old sewing and knitting magazines. Urban garden colors inspire yarn combinations. Even market stalls spark creativity.

I take photos constantly. Not just of finished projects. I capture moments that feel like future mittens. A sunset that would make perfect stripes. Shadows that suggest lace patterns. Building this visual diary feeds my winter dreams.
